Oral surgery may not be number one on your list of things to do, but at some point you will probably need a procedure or two done. If you are interested in learning more about your options, or if you are looking for an oral surgeon in the area, consider Dr. Wendy Willoughby, DDS, our skilled dentist here at Chestnut Family Dentistry in Asheville, NC. Below is more information about the surgeries offered by Dr. Willoughby.
Pinhole Surgical Technique
The pinhole surgical technique is a new technique used to correct receding gums. As gums recede, they can expose the roots of the teeth and increase the risk of tooth decay. Traditionally, oral surgeons have performed a gum graft that involves transplanting tissue from another part of the patient’s mouth.
By contrast, the pinhole surgical technique lengthens existing gums. After numbing the treatment area, the dentist will use a needle to make a “pinhole” in the gum. They will then use special instruments to loosen and lengthen the gum so they can pull it over the tooth. They will fill in any spaces with collagen to make certain the gum doesn’t recede again.
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are made of titanium and look like a screw. Titanium has the advantage of being biocompatible, which means the body won’t reject it. It can also fuse with the jaw bone in a process known as osseointegration, which takes several months.
Dental implants can be used to hold crowns, bridges or dentures in place. Patients in Asheville, NC who need the last usually undergo a hybrid denture-implant procedure.
Dental implants of any type are used to replace missing teeth. Dentists now recommend replacing lost teeth, for the gaps caused by missing teeth can cause the remaining teeth to drift out of alignment. Missing teeth also weaken the jawbone, for the body gradually reabsorbs the bone from the parts of the jaw that aren’t supporting any teeth.
Dental implants can be used to replace a single missing tooth, several missing teeth in a row, or even an entire jaw of missing teeth. The hybrid denture-implant is used in the last case. The dentist will usually use between four to six dental implants in the hybrid denture-implant procedure. After the patient has healed, the dentist will place the custom-made denture over the implants and use screws to secure it.
