Bad breath, or “halitosis”, can be awkward and not fun to say the least! In fact, it can be quite a problem. Here are a few things you can do to combat bad breath in the future!
First, brush and floss regularly. By regularly, I mean brush at least twice daily and floss once a day. We are human; therefore, we have bacteria in our mouths. If you don’t floss and remove that bacteria from in-between your teeth, it recolonizes and grows and can cause a bad smell and yucky taste. You may also want to follow up the flossing with a good mouth rinse. I’d recommend Listerine or Crest Pro Health because they have ingredients that fight bacteria. You definitely want to swish for a minute or longer.
Second, brush your tongue (or scrape with a tongue scraper). The same bacteria that live in-between our teeth live on our tongues. Brush, but be gentle. You may notice a film or discoloration on your tongue (specifically the little “hairy” projections known as papilla). Get those clean, but be careful not to scrub too hard and make your tongue sore.
Next, avoid foods that you know make your breath smell. This one is simple. On that note, kick the tobacco habit. That will improve your breath, as well as teeth and gums a lot! You’ll be amazed at the difference in the overall health of your mouth just one month after quitting!
Lastly, if you really want to get your breath to smelling its best and keeping it there, see your dentist for a cleaning and check up. You could have cavities or gum infection that are contributing to bad breath. A healthy mouth means a healthier body.
