Have you noticed your gum lines receding? Healthy gums are an important part of a healthy mouth, and it is important to treat gum recession in order to maintain dental health. Gum recession exposes the root structure of the tooth, which can lead to tooth decay along the gum line and beneath it. At Chestnut Family Dentistry, we offer the Pinhole Surgical Technique as an alternative, minimally-invasive treatment option to gum graft procedures.
What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique?
The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST), also known as “gum rejuvenation”, was created by Dr. John Chao as a way to repair gum recession without having to use grafts or cut into the gum. Rather than grafting tissue from another part of the mouth, the PST procedure uses a needle to create a small hole in the gum tissue. The gum tissue is then loosened with special instruments and guided over the exposed part of the tooth’s root structure.
Advantages of the Pinhole Surgical Technique
- Restores gum line
- Long-term results
- Instant cosmetic improvement

What can I expect during the procedure?
PST procedures involve adjustment of existing gum tissue. First, our staff will use an anesthetic to numb the treated area and minimize any discomfort the patient may experience. Then, a needle is used to create a “pinhole” in the gum tissue and specially designed instruments are used to loosen and expand the gum tissue. The gum tissue is then guided over the exposed part of the tooth and spaces are filled with collagen to keep the gum in place during the healing process. While there is minimal discomfort involved with the Pinhole Surgical Technique, localized anesthetic can be used at the patient’s request.
What kind of results can I expect?
The Pinhole Surgical Technique treatment is meant to provide permanent gum line correction, however, results can be impacted by poor oral health and the natural aging process.
Are there any side effects?
Patients may experience some pain, swelling, or bleeding immediately following the procedure. These side effects should resolve on their own and should subside within a few days.
What is the recovery period?
There is minimal downtime associated with “gum rejuvenation” treatments as there is no grafting, sutures, or scalpels involved with the procedure. Most patients typically recover from the Pinhole Surgical Technique treatment within 24 hours. The pinhole, which is the only sign of surgery, usually disappears with one day of healing. Our staff will provide you with further recovery instructions following the procedure.
What causes receding gum lines?
Receding gum lines can be caused by many factors, the most common include brushing too hard, teeth grinding, and gum disease.
